  • Reckless riding, including racing and dangerous stunts, is a primary cause of fatal motorcycle convoy accidents, according to Malaysian traffic police.
  • Police noted that despite consistent operations, some riders still take high risks, leading to serious accidents that endanger other road users.
  • While enforcement continues, authorities emphasize the need for public awareness and parental/community involvement to foster responsible road behavior.

Reckless behavior among some motorcyclists, including racing and dangerous stunts, is a major factor in fatal convoy accidents, according to Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali, director of the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department.

Hasbullah stated that despite ongoing operations, some individuals continue to engage in high-risk riding, such as illegal racing and dangerous maneuvers on highways. He highlighted that speeding, sudden lane changes, uncontrolled group riding, and stunts can lead to severe accidents involving multiple vehicles.

"The incidents on the East Coast Expressway (LPT) not only claimed the lives of motorcyclists but also put other road users at risk of injury, property damage, and trauma," Hasbullah said. He stressed that roads are public spaces requiring responsible sharing and adherence to traffic laws.

Recently, four people died and several were injured in an accident involving 12 motorcycles and a car on the LPT 1 near the Jabor Toll Plaza. The crash occurred around 1:20 a.m. as a group of RXZ motorcyclists were on a convoy to Kemaman.

Hasbullah added that enforcement alone is insufficient without public awareness and the support of parents, families, schools, and communities in cultivating responsible road safety attitudes. However, he affirmed that the JSPT will continue to take firm action against individuals violating traffic laws. "At the same time, educational and advocacy efforts must be strengthened so that the public understands that irresponsible actions on the road can lead to loss of life," he urged.

Regarding proposals for new policies targeting motorcyclists, Hasbullah indicated that such measures require thorough consideration. "Motorcycles are a primary mode of transportation for Malaysians, used daily by millions for work and errands," he noted. "Therefore, the most appropriate approach now is to ensure enforcement targets individuals who break the law, rather than punishing the entire community of law-abiding riders." He concluded that any future policy proposals need comprehensive study, considering safety aspects.
