Record 34 Candidates Vie for Clacton Seat in By-Election

A staggering 34 candidates are vying for the Clacton constituency seat in a by-election, a number believed to be the highest in modern British electoral history. The contest was triggered by the resignation of Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who stepped down as MP on July 7th amid scrutiny over his finances and a parliamentary investigation. Notably, Farage is standing again in the election.

The candidate list presents an unusual political landscape, as none of the major Westminster parties are participating. Instead, the ballot features 20 independent candidates alongside several novelty entries, including three from the Monster Raving Loony party. This absence of traditional party representation leaves voters with a wide array of choices, from established local figures to more unconventional options.

Tendring District Council confirmed the record number of candidates, surpassing the previous benchmark of 26 set at the Haltemprice and Howden by-election in 2008. Voters in Clacton will cast their ballots on August 13th to determine who will represent them in Parliament.
