Record-Breaking Heat Dome to Bake US Southwest with Dangerous Temperatures

A severe heat dome is poised to engulf the southwestern United States, threatening to bring dangerous, record-breaking temperatures to more than 45 million people through late August and into early September. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued stark warnings, anticipating daytime highs between 110-115 degrees Fahrenheit (43-46 Celsius) across the region.

Experts predict that this intense late-summer heat could shatter existing temperature records. The NWS highlighted that the high-pressure system will trap hot air, preventing cooler air masses from moving in. Compounding the risk, overnight temperatures are expected to offer little relief, increasing the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those without adequate hydration or cooling measures.

The NWS has classified these conditions as an Extreme Heat Risk, a level deemed hazardous to human health. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions, including limiting strenuous outdoor activities, staying well-hydrated, and wearing lightweight clothing. A critical recommendation is to check on vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and children, who are less able to regulate their body temperature in extreme heat.

In response to the impending heatwave, several cities, including Los Angeles, have announced plans to open public cooling centers to provide residents with a respite from the scorching temperatures. This will maintain an abnormal hazardous heat across the region, with daytime highs of 100-110 F across the Southern Plains, while portions of the southwest will reach up to 115F. With overnight temperatures providing limited relief, heat-related illness may increase, especially for those without proper hydration and adequate cooling.
