Record Heatwave Halts South Korean Pro Baseball; Weekend Games Uncertain

Professional baseball games in South Korea have ground to a halt as a severe heatwave grips the nation. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) canceled all league and Futures League (minor league) games scheduled for August 5th and 6th, marking the first time in five years that the league has suspended play, and the first ever due to extreme heat.

The decision comes after mounting pressure from players and the public following incidents where players and spectators exhibited symptoms of heat-related illness. On August 4th, a game in Incheon was delayed for nine minutes after two male spectators collapsed and 25 others showed signs of heatstroke, despite the region only having a heatwave warning, not the more severe 'major heatwave' alert.

This has prompted the KBO to convene an emergency executive meeting on August 6th. The meeting will involve representatives from the KBO, all 10 teams, and the Korea Professional Baseball Players Association to discuss comprehensive safety measures and operational guidelines. Concerns have been raised about the current criteria for game cancellation, with calls for more detailed considerations, including ground temperature, not just air temperature or official weather alerts.

Discussions are expected to be complex, as teams may have differing views based on their competitive situations. The KBO has stated that games will only resume once a solid plan is in place. If a resolution is not reached quickly, there is a significant possibility that the upcoming weekend series from August 7th to 9th could also be canceled, extending the league's unprecedented pause.
