Rector of Athens University Honored by Patriarchate of Alexandria

In a deeply moving ceremony held at the historic Holy Patriarchal Monastery of Saint George in Old Cairo, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Alexandria bestowed the distinguished title of Grand Archon Chartophylax upon Professor Gerasimos Siassos, the esteemed Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. This significant honor, dating back to the 6th century AD, represents the highest accolade a Patriarch can grant to a prominent lay member of the Church, recognizing exceptional social contributions to both the Church and the broader Hellenic community. Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa lauded Professor Siassos' academic achievements, his scientific standing as a cardiologist, and his leadership of Greece's premier university. The Patriarch emphasized Siassos' 'path of humanity and love.' In his response, Rector Siassos expressed profound gratitude, viewing the honor not just as a personal distinction but as a reflection of the prestige of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He underscored the university's enduring ties with the Orthodox Church since its inception nearly two centuries ago, highlighting the establishment of Greece's first School of Theology. Siassos also acknowledged the connections with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and Patriarch Bartholomew, as well as with Athenian Archbishop Ieronymos and Cypriot Archbishop Georgios, and benefactor Athanasios Martinos. This recognition is particularly meaningful for the Hellenic diaspora, showcasing the strong bonds between academic excellence and religious heritage, and affirming the vital role of institutions like the University of Athens in preserving and promoting Hellenism globally.
