Red River Dike Collapse Forces Urgent Evacuation of 11 Households in Phu Tho

Residents of Phong Chau ward in Phu Tho province are facing a distressing situation as severe land subsidence along the Red River dike has forced the urgent evacuation of 11 households. The ground has sunk by as much as 50-70cm, creating alarming cracks that threaten the structural integrity of homes and raise fears of them being swallowed by the earth.

The situation escalated rapidly, prompting immediate action from local authorities. Chairman Hoang Anh Vu of the Phong Chau People's Committee confirmed the emergency evacuation, emphasizing the danger posed by the geological instability. The affected area is deemed irreparable due to foundational issues, necessitating the relocation of residents.

The area where the landslip and subsidence occurred cannot be repaired due to geological layer breakage and foundation subsidence. 11 households have been evacuated to stay with relatives. Households facing difficulties without a place to live will be supported by the ward.

In response, the ward has cordoned off the hazardous zone, erected warning signs, and established a 24-hour watch to prevent any unauthorized entry. Efforts are underway to assess the damage and provide support to the displaced families, with priority given to those lacking alternative accommodation. The ward is also working with provincial authorities to arrange for the long-term resettlement of the affected households, acknowledging that the area is no longer safe for habitation.
