Redevelopment's housing supply effect debated by President Lee and experts

A national real estate policy forum held on July 23 revealed a divergence of opinions between President Lee Jae-myung and real estate experts regarding the impact of redevelopment and reconstruction projects on housing supply.

President Lee adopted a cautious stance, indicating that urban renewal projects, such as redevelopment and reconstruction, may not lead to a substantial increase in the number of households. In some cases, he suggested, these projects could even result in a decrease in available housing units.

Conversely, real estate experts participating in the forum emphasized that the effectiveness of these projects should be evaluated not solely on the volume of new housing units created. They argued that the quality and desirability of the new apartments are equally crucial factors in addressing the housing market's needs. The discussion highlighted the need to increase the number of new apartments that people genuinely want to live in.
