Reflecting Pool at Lincoln Memorial Drained Amid Renovation Woes

Workers have begun draining the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial, marking another phase in the ongoing efforts to address issues with the iconic landmark's renovation. The process of emptying the pool is underway, according to reports from the Associated Press.

The renovation project was initially spurred by former President Donald Trump ahead of the 250th anniversary of American Independence. A key part of the plan involved repainting the pool's bottom with a color Trump described as "American Flag Blue." This repainting was previously attempted, requiring the pool to be drained at that time as well.

However, the renovation has been plagued by problems. Shortly after the initial repainting in June, an algae bloom appeared in the water. Critics attribute this to the new paint, suggesting it encourages algae growth. Furthermore, parts of the new coating began to detach from the pool's floor. Trump attributed the peeling coating to vandalism and threatened severe penalties for those responsible, leading to the prosecution of former Olympian David Hearn.

Critics, however, view the investigation into Hearn as a potential misuse of state power, suggesting a scapegoat is being sought. The Trust for Cultural Landscape (TCLF) had previously filed a lawsuit against the redesign. The current draining of the pool indicates that further work is needed to rectify the persistent issues and ensure the Reflecting Pool's integrity and appearance.
