Regional acting icon Seka Sablić celebrates 84th birthday

Jelisaveta Seka Sablić, an icon of regional acting, celebrated her 84th birthday, demonstrating a vitality and sharpness of spirit that belies her years. Her career, spanning over six decades, has cemented her as a symbol of artistic dedication, with roles that have transcended national borders and time.

From her early days at Atelje 212 theater, where she has been a member since 1967, to her appearances in cult films that defined Yugoslav cinema and television series whose lines have become viral memes, Sablić's influence is undeniable. Her humor, however, was always more than mere entertainment; it served as a precise critique of societal pathologies, offering a penetrating look at provincialism, false morality, and hypocrisy.

Her portrayal of Kristina in Slobodan Šijan's 1982 masterpiece "Maratonci trče počasni krug" (The Marathon Family Runs the Lap of Honor) remains one of her most memorable roles, earning her a Golden Arena award and immortalizing her as a film heroine. Sablić herself expressed surprise at the film's enduring cult status, recalling her win at the Pula Film Festival while on vacation in Greece.

Despite her extensive body of work, including nearly 200 theater plays, fifty series, and twenty films, Sablić insists that comedy is not just about laughter. "Comedy is actually rebellion and revenge. Against those who deserve it," she explained. This rebellious spirit is evident in her public statements, where she has never shied away from criticizing authorities and societal anomalies.

Sablić's outspokenness has not been without consequence. Her statement to the Serbian weekly Nin, "The homeland is where you are well, not where the stuffed cabbage rolls are," provoked anger from right-wing circles in Serbia. She remains firm in her views, drawing parallels between the 1990s and the current era in Serbia, which she describes as "much more brutal."
