Registered Unemployment in Lithuania Falls 0.8 Percentage Points in a Year

Lithuania’s labor market became more active in August, with employers posting 16,100 vacancies, 6% more than in July. Registered unemployment remained at 8%, but stood 0.8 percentage points below its level a year earlier.

The greatest demand came from manufacturing, which listed 3,700 jobs. Employers in trade posted 2,400 vacancies, followed by administrative and service activities with 2,300, construction with 1,700, accommodation and food services with 1,100, and education with 1,000.

The Employment Service said employers were seeking teachers in several disciplines, social and personal-care workers, nursing specialists, accountants, warehouse staff, construction engineers, butchers, meat-product workers, woodworking equipment operators, cutters, bakers and pastry cooks.

After a quieter midsummer, the labor market became noticeably more active in August.

A total of 16,800 Employment Service clients found jobs with its assistance, 11.4% more than in July. Another 7,600 jobseekers chose self-employment under business certificates, while 900 entered supported-employment measures, received training or mobility assistance, or were hired with subsidies.

The number of registered Employment Service clients changed little. As of September 1, 145,600 people held unemployed status. Registered unemployment was lowest in Neringa at 1.2% and highest in Kalvarija at 11.2%. The Employment Service said 1.46 million people were working in Lithuania at the start of September, 0.75% fewer than a month earlier.
