Rehabilitated Benghazi University reopened during an extravagant opening ceremony

The University of Benghazi has reopened after an extensive rehabilitation and development project, in a ceremony described as extravagant. The Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund carried out the work at the university, which suffered extensive damage during Benghazi’s wars.

The project forms part of the Fund’s strategic drive to upgrade higher education infrastructure. It aims to provide an integrated university environment suited to the institution’s stature, history, and academic and national role.

Senior figures from Libya’s eastern-based authorities attended the ceremony. They included House of Representatives Speaker Ageela Saleh, First Deputy Speaker Fawzi Al-Nuwairi, Second Deputy Speaker Misbah Douma, Prime Minister Osama Hammad, and Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.

The reopening places the restored university at the center of an effort to renew higher education facilities in Benghazi after years of war-related damage.
