Religion must unite, not divide Nigerians, says Fashola

Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has called for increased religious tolerance in Nigeria, emphasizing that faith should serve as a unifying force rather than a source of division. Speaking at the annual “God in My Life” lecture series organized by the Torchbearer Society of the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral in Ikeja, Lagos, Fashola, who is Muslim, stressed that religious beliefs should remain personal convictions and never be imposed upon others.

Fashola urged Nigerians from diverse religious backgrounds to foster mutual respect, highlighting peaceful coexistence as crucial for national unity. He described God as the ultimate architect of the universe, whose guidance is evident in various aspects of human life, including family, friends, schools, and workplaces. Reflecting on his own upbringing, Fashola recalled his early experiences in the Anglican Church and how they shaped his personal development.

He also recounted several near-death experiences from his youth, attributing his survival to divine providence amidst youthful recklessness. These experiences, he suggested, serve as reminders of God's continuous influence and prompt reflection on the extent of human control over life's journey. Fashola questioned whether individuals could truly dictate the order of life's phases if given the choice, implying that life's uncertainties underscore a higher power's role.

Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lagos West, Rt. Revd. Olusola Odedeji, who served as the Chief Host, described the lecture series as an important occasion for reflection, testimony, and gratitude. The event, themed around the role of God in human existence, provided a platform for discussions on faith, personal journeys, and the importance of interfaith harmony in Nigeria.
