Renowned climber Nirmal Purja among seven killed in Broad Peak avalanche

Seven climbers, including the internationally acclaimed Nirmal Purja, have been confirmed dead after a powerful avalanche struck Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range. The avalanche, which occurred on July 30th, buried 10 members of an international expedition, leaving three others still missing.

Nirmal Purja, also known as Nims Dai, was a former British Army Gurkha soldier who gained global fame in 2019 for summiting all 14 peaks over 8,000 meters in a record 189 days. His remarkable achievement was later documented in a Netflix film.

Rescue teams recovered four bodies on Friday, July 31st, but were unable to retrieve them immediately due to poor weather conditions preventing helicopter use. On Saturday, August 1st, rescue teams reached the bodies of Purja and three other climbers on foot. Among the missing is Sohail Sakhi, a Pakistani guide and photographer who had planned to retire after this expedition.

The recovery mission in the remote and dangerous area was complicated by Pakistan's limited resources for helicopter-assisted mountain rescue operations compared to neighboring Nepal. The deceased climbers hailed from five different countries: Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, the USA, and China, underscoring Broad Peak's international draw. Climbing Broad Peak is considered one of the most challenging among the world's 14 highest mountains.
