Renowned conductor Chen Yi-fu dies suddenly at 56; final post wished followers good health

Taiwanese conductor Chen Yi-fu, a celebrated figure in the classical music scene, has died suddenly at the age of 56. His passing was discovered on July 26 after he failed to appear for a scheduled event and could not be contacted by colleagues.

Chen had just celebrated his birthday on July 25. The previous day, he had posted on Facebook about experiencing sudden stomach cramps during a concert. He described witnessing the busy state of the emergency room late at night before returning home around 2 a.m. His post concluded with a wish for everyone's good health, a message that has now taken on a somber significance as his final public statement.

Chen was expected to attend a wind ensemble performance event at a high school in New Taipei City. When performers could not reach him, they went to his residence. After receiving no response to their calls, they contacted the police, who subsequently forced entry into his home and discovered him deceased, seated in a chair. The concert was immediately canceled.

Chen Yi-fu was a prominent conductor, and his unexpected death has cast a pall over the arts community in Taiwan. His contributions to music and his sudden departure leave a void that will be deeply felt.
