Renowned Lithuanian Choirmaster Leokadija Olšauskaitė-Januškienė Dies

Leokadija Stefanija Olšauskaitė-Januškienė, one of Lithuania's most distinguished choirmasters, educators, and conductors, has died. Her passing was announced by the Kaunas Culture Center, where her name and extensive creative work are deeply intertwined with its history.

With deep sadness, we bid farewell to one of Lithuania's most distinguished choirmasters, educators, and conductors, Leokadija Stefanija Olšauskaite-Januškiene, whose name and long-standing creative activity are inseparable from the history of the Kaunas Culture Center.

Olšauskaitė-Januškienė took the helm of the Kaunas Culture Center's mixed choir "Gintaras" in 1976. For over thirty years, she nurtured the ensemble with her talent, professionalism, and profound love for choral music. Under her guidance, "Gintaras" achieved significant recognition, performing in prominent concert halls across Lithuania and abroad, and becoming one of the country's strongest amateur choirs. The choir was named the best in Lithuania in 1985 and received the "Golden Bird" award in 2000, recognizing it as Lithuania's brightest star.

Her leadership of "Gintaras" experienced a bright creative period, earning significant recognition and becoming one of the strongest amateur choirs in the country.

Her influence, however, extended beyond "Gintaras." Maestro Olšauskaitė-Januškienė was a conductor for the National Song Festivals, a dedicated cultivator of choral culture, and a teacher to many aspiring choirmasters. Her initiatives, professionalism, and devotion have left an indelible mark on the choral landscape of Kaunas and all of Lithuania. She was honored with the II degree Santaka Honorary Badge in 2007.

Maestro Leokadija Januškienė's contribution was not limited to one ensemble. She was a conductor for the Song Festivals, a cultivator of choral culture, an educator, and a teacher to many choirmasters.

The Kaunas Culture Center community expressed deep gratitude for her decades of dedication, her heart poured into "Gintaras," the music that continues to resonate, and the people she inspired and united. They extended sincere condolences to her family, loved ones, students, colleagues, the "Gintaras" community, and all who knew her. Her bright memory will forever be a part of the Kaunas Culture Center's history.
