Repeat Offender Sentenced to 2 Years, 2 Months for Jewel Theft

A serial burglar in Taichung has been sentenced to two years and two months in prison for breaking into a home and stealing valuables. The man, identified by the surname Lin, was convicted of aggravated theft after a court found his post-offense behavior to be particularly egregious.

The incident occurred last year when Lin allegedly wore gloves and climbed onto a rain shelter to access a third-floor apartment in Taichung's Xitun District. He then entered the residence through a window and ransacked the property, making off with an estimated NT$50,000 in cash, a diamond ring, and three gold items. The homeowner discovered the theft upon returning that evening and immediately reported it to the police.

During the investigation, police searched Lin's residence and recovered one of the stolen diamond rings. However, Lin consistently denied the charges, claiming he was not at the scene and that the recovered ring was purchased from a friend. He also attempted to distance himself from surveillance footage showing a man matching his description.

Despite Lin's denials, evidence mounted against him. Surveillance cameras captured his vehicle, his wife testified that he had been in the Xitun District on the day of the crime, and the clothing recovered from his home matched that worn by the burglar in the victim's security footage. The court took into account Lin's prior theft convictions, which made him eligible for a heavier sentence under habitual offender laws. His refusal to admit guilt, attempts to shift blame to a friend, and his defiant courtroom behavior, including telling the prosecutor to "be careful," were cited as factors contributing to the harsh sentence.
