Reps panel threatens sanctions as agencies ignore probe summons

Nigeria's House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee has issued a final ultimatum to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) that have failed to respond to its invitations. The committee is conducting a critical investigation into the alleged establishment and operations of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC). Its statement on Tuesday expressed profound disappointment, labeling the non-compliance of some government agencies as a direct affront to the constitutional oversight powers vested in the House.

The committee emphasized that compliance with its invitations is a legal obligation, not a matter of courtesy, citing Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution. It has directed all defaulting MDAs to appear on Thursday, bringing necessary officers and requested documents. This date is designated as the "final opportunity" for voluntary compliance. The committee warned that any agency failing to appear without a lawful excuse will face the full extent of the House's constitutional and statutory powers to compel attendance.

Furthermore, the committee stated its intention to recommend and pursue legal sanctions against individuals or institutions deliberately hindering the investigation. The probe aims to establish facts, safeguard public administration integrity, uphold the rule of law, and ensure all public institutions operate within constitutional and legal frameworks. The committee pledged a professional, fair, and transparent investigation, asserting that no government agency, regardless of status, will be permitted to undermine the House's authority.
