Reps probe N2bn linked to mining marshals commander, funding of special unit

Nigeria's House of Representatives has resolved to launch an investigation into alleged financial impropriety and operational irregularities within the specialized Mining Marshals unit. The probe follows concerns raised by lawmaker Abdulmaleek Danga regarding the unit's activities and its legal standing.

The House is concerned by reports indicating a deviation from this mandate, characterised by allegations that the Mining Marshals lack deep operational knowledge of the mining sector, resulting in the wrongful apprehension and harassment of legitimate mineral title holders while misrepresenting these actions to the public as successful crackdowns on illegal operators.

Key allegations include the discovery of over N2 billion in the bank account of one of the unit's State Commanders. Instead of facing prosecution or disciplinary action, the commander was reportedly redeployed, fueling suspicions of compromise within the unit. Danga expressed worry that this redeployment, rather than a formal inquiry, suggests potential collusion with affluent illegal mining syndicates.

The House is also concerned by grave allegations of financial impropriety within the unit, specifically the reported discovery of over N2bn in the bank account of a State Commander of the Mining Marshals.

The House is also examining whether the Mining Marshals have strayed from their core mandate of combating illegal mining and securing mining sites. Reports suggest the unit may lack sufficient operational knowledge, leading to the harassment of legitimate mineral title holders while misrepresenting these actions as crackdowns on illegal operators. Furthermore, the transparency of the unit's finances, particularly the procurement of operational vehicles without clear legislative appropriation, is under scrutiny.

The House is worried that instead of a formal judicial inquiry, prosecution, or internal disciplinary action, the said Commander was merely redeployed, fuelling allegations that the Marshals are being compromised by affluent illegal mining syndicates.
