Republican with same name as incumbent Dan Sullivan advances from Alaska U.S. Senate primary

Alaska's U.S. Senate race is shaping up to be one of the nation's most closely watched contests, featuring a unique electoral dynamic. Dan J. Sullivan, a candidate sharing the same name as the incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, has successfully advanced to the general election following the Aug. 18 primary.

The challenger, Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher from Petersburg, had to sue to secure his place on the ballot. A judge overturned a decision by a state elections official who had questioned his candidacy, citing an intent to confuse voters. This allegation was reportedly fueled by claims from the incumbent senator and his Republican allies. The state Supreme Court ultimately ruled in favor of Dan J. Sullivan's eligibility.

While the challenger sought to be listed as Republican Dan J. Sullivan, the Division of Elections registered him as Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., without party affiliation. The incumbent was listed as Dan S. Sullivan, Republican and incumbent. Both Senator Sullivan and former U.S. Representative Mary Peltola, a Democrat, have also advanced to the November matchup, which will be conducted using ranked-choice voting. The fourth and final slot in the Senate general election race remained undetermined due to ongoing ballot counts.

President Donald Trump had endorsed Senator Sullivan, characterizing the challenger's candidacy as a tactic to mislead voters. However, Dan J. Sullivan criticized the incumbent's embrace of Trump's endorsement, stating the president was more focused on trade disputes than domestic economic issues. The race also features other significant contests, including those for Alaska's sole U.S. House seat and the governorship.
