Rescue Dog Yuri Wins Top Prize at Cannes with Palm Dog Award

Cannes celebrated more than just human stars this year as Yuri, a rescue dog, captured the spotlight and the coveted Palm Dog award for her performance in the Chilean drama "La Perra." The unofficial but highly anticipated award recognizes outstanding canine acting at the festival.

It’s not a dog doing lots of tricks. But it (the film) really shows the bond and how this woman’s life improves once Yuri, the dog, comes into it.

Judges lauded Yuri's "naturalistic performance," noting her central and essential contribution to the film's plot. The award ceremony saw Apocalypse, another rescue dog, humbly accept the prize on Yuri's behalf, receiving applause and barks of approval from the audience overlooking the French Riviera.

"La Perra," which premiered in the Directors' Fortnight independent sidebar, tells the story of a woman on a remote Chilean island whose life is transformed after impulsively adopting a puppy named Yuri. Film journalist Wendy Mitchell, a judge, highlighted that the film "really shows the bond and how this woman’s life improves once Yuri, the dog, comes into it," emphasizing that it wasn't about a dog performing tricks but about the deep connection formed.

As a jury member, I’m always looking for a story where the dog is absolutely essential to the narrative.

Another judge, film critic Anna Smith, stressed the importance of the dog being "absolutely essential to the narrative." Yuri triumphed over six other canine competitors. The Palm Dog award, now a genuinely coveted prize since its inception in 2001 by film journalist Toby Rose, has a notable history, with past winners including Messi from "Anatomy of a Fall" and Uggie from "The Artist."
