Rescue Teams Called Out for Recreational Boat

A missing recreational boat has triggered a significant search and rescue operation in Iceland, involving multiple rescue teams and the Coast Guard. The vessel, which departed its harbor around 10 a.m., has not been located, leading to concerns for the safety of its two occupants.

The Icelandic Coast Guard initiated a search after the boat failed to maintain its expected hourly communication. Ásgeir Erlendsson, spokesperson for the Coast Guard, confirmed that attempts to contact the boat were unsuccessful. Recreational boats are not mandated to carry automatic location systems, but crews are typically expected to check in regularly.

The Coast Guard's aircraft, TF-SIF, was diverted from a surveillance flight to join the search. Despite these efforts, the boat remains missing. Consequently, rescue teams from Faxaflói and Akranes have been mobilized, and other vessels in the area have been asked to assist in the search for the missing boat.
