Rescuers in Nepal Pull Chinese National and Woman Alive 10 Days After Devastating Floods

Ten days after devastating floods struck Nepal, rescuers found two more people alive: a Chinese national trapped in a hydropower tunnel and a woman inside a house in flood-hit Nuwakot.

The man was rescued from a 225-meter tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower plant by a joint team of Nepalese military personnel and South Korean disaster experts, Nepal’s army said. He was taken by helicopter for a health assessment, with an army medic checking him during the flight. His rescue brought the number of workers pulled alive from the Trishuli hydropower project to three. Two Nepalese workers had been rescued from a tunnel on Friday.

In Nuwakot town, rescuers pulled the woman from a house and wrapped her in a gray blanket. Officials said they were airlifting her to Kathmandu.

The rescues came as authorities continued searching for people missing from hydropower sites across the country. About 900 workers are missing from 12 projects, and roughly 500 are believed to be trapped in tunnels. Nepal’s disaster management agency said at least 1,300 people died in the Aug. 26 floods, which were likely caused by a glacier collapse, while more than 5,000 people remained missing.
