Researcher urges Chile to summon Argentine ambassador over sovereignty remarks

Chile should summon Argentina’s ambassador in Santiago and demand formal explanations over statements questioning sovereignty in the southern region, researcher Jorge Sanz said.

Sanz, an academic at Chile’s National Academy of Political and Strategic Studies, argued that the government must use high-level diplomatic tools to ensure that remarks by Argentine ministers and lawmakers do not go unanswered.

In an interview with El Diario de Cooperativa, he warned that passivity or the absence of an official protest would create a geopolitical risk that Chile could not tolerate. He said failing to respond could also amount to validating the statements.

“Summoning the ambassador and asking for explanations is a diplomatic gesture of the greatest importance,” Sanz said. “It could be that, or it could be another tool available to the Chilean government. But these matters cannot be allowed to pass, because they remain in history.”
