Residents flock to free charity börek: “The last time I ate it was last year”

Residents in Kadirli, in Turkey’s Osmaniye province, lined up for free börek distributed by a benefactor on Atatürk Avenue.

They are distributing börek as a charity, so I thought I would get one. Börek costs 25 lira in the market. My pension is not enough. I receive 7,000 lira, and it does not last from month to month.

For people living on limited incomes, the pastry has become difficult to afford. One resident receiving an old-age pension said a börek cost 25 lira, while a monthly payment of 7,000 lira did not last through the month.

“Because we do not have money, we cannot pay 25 lira for börek,” another resident said. Buying two would cost 50 lira, but the free distribution allowed them to eat it.

I came to get börek. Because we do not have money, we cannot pay 25 lira and eat it. One costs 25 lira, two cost 50 lira. Here it is free, so I am eating it.

A different resident said the last time they had eaten börek was the previous year. They thanked the person who organized the distribution and wished them abundant earnings. Others also expressed gratitude, saying the charity had helped people who otherwise could not afford the food.
