Residents Report Anak Krakatau Ash Reaching Bogor and Jakarta

Residents in Bogor Regency reported waking to fine volcanic dust on their homes and vehicles after renewed activity at Anak Krakatau.

Kiki Nurjanah, who lives in Bojong Gede, said she saw dust flying shortly after dawn at around 6 a.m. She initially did not know where it came from, but connected it to Anak Krakatau after seeing news reports.

Another resident, Tati Tarwiyah, said she found the floor of her yard covered in a thick layer of dust, even though she had swept it the night before. “Suddenly the yard tiles were dirty and covered in dust. I had swept them the night before,” she said.

Both women chose to stay home because they feared inhaling the very fine particles. “So I’m afraid to go outside. I’ll just stay home today because I’m afraid the dust will make me cough,” Tati said.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation recorded a sequence of eruptions beginning on the night of Sept. 4. It identified the activity as lava fountains, with eruption-related seismic activity lasting 21,600 seconds and reaching a maximum amplitude of 70 millimeters, the highest intensity recorded during 2026.
