Residents seek action against kidnappings, killings in Edo communities

A palpable sense of fear and frustration grips Auchi and its environs in Edo State, as indigenes and residents have penned an urgent appeal to President Bola Tinubu and the military high command. The plea is for decisive intervention against the relentless wave of kidnappings and killings that have plagued the area, turning daily life into a constant struggle for safety. This open letter, signed by the Concerned Residents and Youths of Auchi Sacred Kingdom and Surrounding Communities, lays bare the deep-seated pain and helplessness felt by the populace.

We write this petition from a place of deep pain, fear, and frustration. For too long, our area has been plagued by relentless kidnapping, violence, and insecurity.

The recent killing of a young man, Christopher, and the abduction of his female acquaintance on April 19, mere meters from a military checkpoint, starkly illustrates the gravity of the situation. This incident, occurring at the notorious Fertiliser Checkpoint along the Auchi–Igarra Road, underscores a disturbing pattern of insecurity in an area supposedly under surveillance. The fact that kidnappers operate with such impunity, even near military installations like the Nigerian Army School of Mechanical Engineering, raises serious questions about the effectiveness and commitment of security forces on the ground.

The soldier checkpoint at Fertiliser Junction, Igbira Camp axis, meant to protect us, has instead become a symbol of abandonment, inaction, and alleged misconduct.

The residents' letter goes further, leveling serious accusations against the soldiers stationed at the Fertiliser Junction checkpoint. Allegations of delaying indigenous vigilantes and hunters who were acting on intelligence, thereby allowing suspects to escape, are particularly damning. Furthermore, accusations of alleged extortion at the checkpoint paint a grim picture of compromised security operations.
