Resorts Barring Outside Food and Drinks: Consumer Rights Under Scrutiny

A growing number of tourists are voicing frustration over restrictions at various beach resorts, where they are reportedly denied entry with their own food and beverages. This policy effectively compels visitors to purchase refreshments exclusively from vendors within the resort premises.

The situation presents a significant challenge for families with young children, who often require specific food items, and for individuals managing special diets. On-site offerings at many resorts are frequently limited in variety or may not cater to particular dietary requirements, exacerbating the inconvenience for these visitors.

Sorin Mierlea, president of the consumer protection organization InfoCons, addressed the issue, clarifying the legal standing on bringing outside food and water into resorts. He explained the boundaries of an operator's right to set commercial rules and highlighted potential infringements on consumer rights that may occur under such policies.

Mierlea noted that these restrictions are common across many Romanian resorts and water parks. He pointed out that while rules often cite food safety as a reason, consumers should carefully review resort regulations before entry. He emphasized that such prohibitions are not unique to resorts, appearing in restaurants and event venues as well, often under the guise of ensuring food safety.
