Rethymno: 35-year-old Israeli arrested for negligent arson – Used barbecue in high-risk zone

Authorities in Rethymno, Crete, have arrested a 35-year-old Israeli national in connection with a fire that broke out on August 14, 2026. The blaze, which occurred in the southern part of Rethymno within the Finikas Municipal Unit of the Agios Vassilios Municipality, threatened to escalate but was brought under control by firefighting forces after approximately four hours.

According to the investigation, the Israeli citizen allegedly caused the fire through negligence around 7:11 PM while using a barbecue. The incident took place in an area classified under Category 4, indicating a very high risk of fire.

The 35-year-old was apprehended on August 15, 2026, under a flagrante delicto procedure for negligent arson. He is expected to be brought before the justice system.

This incident occurs amidst a period of heightened fire risk across Greece. Official statistics reveal that from January 1 to August 15, 2026, a total of 716 administrative fines were imposed, amounting to over 1.1 million euros. Additionally, 297 individuals were arrested under flagrante delicto procedures, with the vast majority (267) attributed to negligence and 30 to intentional acts.

The Fire Service's Directorate for the Response to Arson Crimes (DAEE) and investigative services remain on high alert, conducting intensive checks and assigning responsibility for violations. The Fire Service emphasizes that human negligence remains the primary cause of most fires, urging the public to adhere to fire safety measures and avoid activities that could spark ignition.
