Rethymno Fire: All-Night Battle Against Flames in Sellia – Precautionary Evacuations by 112

Firefighters are engaged in an all-night battle against a significant wildfire that erupted Friday afternoon in the Sellia area of Rethymno, Crete. The fire, located in the municipality of Agios Vasilios, remains uncontained, with strong winds exacerbating the situation and complicating suppression efforts.

As of Saturday morning, ground forces continue to operate at the scene, with concerns high for potential flare-ups due to the persistent winds. The Fire Service reported that 63 firefighters, supported by three ground teams, volunteers, and 18 vehicles, are working to control the blaze. Heavy machinery and water tankers from local authorities are also assisting.

Earlier, the 112 emergency service issued a precautionary evacuation message for residents in the Fotainari and Souda areas. They were advised to evacuate towards Koraka beach in Rodakino via the coastal road. While aerial resources participated until sunset, the primary focus has now shifted to ground crews working through the night to prevent further spread and protect populated areas.
