Rethymno: Tourists return to Agia Galini as work begins to repair power and roads

The area of Rethymno is gradually returning to normal following a destructive fire near Krya Vrysi, with firefighting operations continuing for full containment. Visitors who were evacuated from Agia Galini are now returning to their accommodations.

Approximately 100 individuals who were temporarily housed in the Festos Indoor Gymnasium, supported by the Municipality of Festos and the Region of Crete, are being prioritized for their return. Other visitors unable to immediately return to their residences are safely accommodated in temporary hotel facilities.

Simultaneously, extensive work is in progress to restore critical infrastructure. Teams from the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) are working intensively to repair severe damage to the power grid, including destroyed poles and cable sections. Road crews are also clearing and repairing roads in the affected region to restore traffic flow.

The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection is in constant coordination with the Region of Crete, the Municipalities of Agios Vasileios and Festos, HEDNO, and the Hellenic Police. The goal is to expedite the return to normalcy for both residents and tourists.
