Retired Admiral questions Turkey's role in Mecca defense pact

Retired Rear Admiral Yankı Bağcıoğlu has voiced concerns regarding Turkey's potential commitments under the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, particularly in light of escalating regional tensions. He pointed to recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabian oil facilities and Saudi-linked ships as potential triggers for a new escalation in Yemen.

Bağcıoğlu warned that a continuation or increase in these attacks could compel Saudi Arabia to expand its air operations and provide more direct support to pro-Yemen government forces on the ground. He further noted that if the Houthis retaliate with missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan might face obligations under the defense agreement.

Therefore, he asserted that any commitments Turkey might have under the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement must first be thoroughly evaluated and debated within the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
