Governor of South Kivu, Jean-Jacques Purusi, has called for calm and the resumption of normal activities in Uvira, the provisional capital of the province. He made this appeal upon his arrival in the city on Tuesday, August 4, after an extended absence.

The provincial executive stated that false information is circulating on social media concerning the security situation. These reports falsely claim that certain localities, including Lenge and Rurambo, have fallen, and that Uvira is encircled by M23 rebels. Governor Purusi attributed this to a "disinformation campaign" orchestrated by "networks close to the enemy."

Governor Purusi assured the population that the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and the Wazalendo defense groups are actively present on the ground, working to secure the population and surrounding areas. He confirmed that necessary measures are in place to protect Uvira and its inhabitants. "Sleep peacefully. We ourselves are here, we sleep here.
