Richard Carapaz completed the second stage of the Vuelta a España without significant time differences among the main general classification contenders. The second stage, a 150.4 km route from Mijas to Granada, saw Matthew Brennan of Visma | Lease a Bike claim victory in a sprint finish. Brennan crossed the line in 04:47:47, securing his first Grand Tour stage win. Pogačar finished third in the stage, earning four bonus seconds, while Brennan's win also propelled him to third in the general classification, just 10 seconds behind Pogačar.

Carapaz began the Vuelta with an individual time trial in Monaco, where his performance set an initial time difference before the road stages commenced. The Vuelta features 21 stages concluding on September 13 in Granada. This year's race includes approximately 58,000 meters of cumulative elevation gain, a factor that could prove advantageous for Carapaz as the race progresses into the mountains.
