Ricoh announces GR IVx camera with 40mm lens, closer to human vision

Ricoh has officially announced the development of the GR IVx, a new model set to join its highly acclaimed GR series, known for its street photography capabilities. This upcoming camera aims to offer a focal length that closely approximates natural human vision, a key feature for photographers seeking to capture candid moments.

The GR IVx will build upon the foundation of its predecessor, the GR IV, retaining core elements such as high image quality, rapid shooting capabilities, and portability. It will feature a fixed focal length lens with an actual focal length of 26.1mm and an aperture of F2.8 to F16. However, on its APS-C sensor, this will provide an equivalent field of view of approximately 40mm. Ricoh highlights that this 40mm perspective is closer to how the human eye naturally perceives the world, allowing for more focused and intuitive subject framing.

While sharing a similar 40mm focal length with the GR IIIx, the GR IVx's lens boasts a redesigned optical construction. It will consist of 6 elements in 8 groups, incorporating three aspherical elements. The aperture range remains F2.8 to F16. The camera will also include 5-axis in-body image stabilization, 53GB of internal storage, and a hybrid autofocus system with face and eye detection. Its closest focusing distance is 20cm, indicating its versatility for various shooting scenarios.

In related news, Ricoh has indicated that current models like the GR IIIx, GR IIIx HDF, and GR IIIx Urban Edition are approaching the end of their production life. Due to component supply shortages, the Japanese market expects to see the final shipment batches around October 2026. The discontinuation timeline in other international markets may vary depending on existing inventory levels.
