Rights Commission Grants Protection to Nicaraguan Political Prisoner

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has issued precautionary measures for Beyker Ferreti Hernández, a Nicaraguan opposition figure imprisoned since October 2022. The commission determined that Ferreti faces a "situation of gravity and urgency," with his rights to life, personal integrity, and health at risk of irreparable harm in Nicaragua.

Ferreti was convicted of murdering a 14-month-old child, a charge the child's father, Nelson Lorío, has vehemently rejected. Lorío stated that Ferreti is the third individual the government has attempted to implicate in his son's death. The IACHR noted that Ferreti, who participated in the 2018 social protests against the Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo government, has been held without adequate medical care for existing health conditions at the Jorge Navarro National Penitentiary, known as "La Modelo."

The commission also reported that Ferreti has allegedly been subjected to physical abuse, threats, mistreatment, and detention in inappropriate conditions. The Nicaraguan state failed to provide information to the IACHR, an autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS). Based on the evidence, the IACHR requested Nicaragua to implement measures protecting Ferreti's fundamental rights, ensure his detention conditions meet international standards, and investigate the alleged events to prevent their recurrence.
