Rijeka Faces Derry City in Europa Conference League, Marking Coach Kek's Return

Croatian football club HNK Rijeka is preparing to face Derry City, the sole Northern Irish representative in the Republic of Ireland's Premier League, in the first qualifying round of the Europa Conference League. This encounter marks a significant European debut for Rijeka's highly successful coach, Matjaž Kek, who returns to the helm after an eight-year hiatus.

Derry City, currently valued at 3.93 million euros by Transfermarkt, is a formidable opponent despite Rijeka's significantly higher valuation of 34.55 million euros. The club's unique history sheds light on its current league affiliation. Historically, Derry City, based in Londonderry, faced severe security challenges during the late 1960s and 70s due to sectarian violence. Matches against clubs with predominantly unionist fan bases became a security risk, leading to drastic measures.

Following incidents like the burning of a team bus in 1971, the football association banned matches at Derry City's Brandywell stadium, deeming it too dangerous. The club was forced to play home games in Coleraine, nearly 50 kilometers away, a journey that proved unsustainable for most fans due to security checkpoints. This logistical and financial strain nearly led to the club's collapse.

Despite a vote against readmission to the Northern Irish league in 1972, Derry City eventually found a new path. In 1985, with special permission from FIFA and the Northern Irish Football Association, the club joined the newly formed Premier Division of the Republic of Ireland league, embarking on a new and celebrated chapter. This historical context adds a unique layer to their upcoming European clash with Rijeka, which also signifies Kek's return to club management after being dismissed from Rijeka in 2018.
