Riley Greene Hits Two Homers and Drives in Four as Tigers Shut Out Guardians 6-0

Riley Greene supplied the power and Framber Valdez delivered the pitching as the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-0 on Saturday.

Greene hit solo home runs to left-center field against Parker Messick in the first and sixth innings, giving Detroit a 3-0 lead. He also singled home Gleyber Torres in the third inning and doubled to bring Torres home in the seventh. The four-hit performance marked Greene’s season high, and his two homers were his first since Aug. 4 in Seattle.

Detroit added three runs in the seventh against Matt Festa. Ben Malgeri’s single brought Greene home as the Tigers pulled away. Greene’s performance marked his second multi-home-run game of the season.

Valdez improved to 9-10 after allowing three singles over seven innings, matching his longest outing of the year. He struck out three and walked one, holding Cleveland without a hit after the second inning. Kyle Finnegan and Beau Brieske completed the shutout.

Messick struck out 12, a career high, over six innings and struck out all three batters in an inning twice. He allowed three runs and fell to 0-2 in three starts against Detroit this season. The Guardians, who remain third in the American League wild-card race, moved only two runners beyond first base. Detroit’s victory was only its fifth in 21 games since Aug. 14.
