Riot erupts in Jakarta over Asset Seizure Bill, police station set ablaze

Protests in Jakarta concerning the proposed Asset Seizure Bill devolved into significant riots, with the Pejompongan area becoming a focal point of the unrest. The demonstrations, which began earlier in the day, continued into Thursday evening, August 27, 2026, culminating in clashes between protesters and police.

As police moved to disperse the crowds around 8 PM, demonstrators reportedly resisted, leading to violent confrontations. Videos circulating online showed the situation escalating, with protesters damaging public infrastructure, including CCTV cameras, and setting fire to a police post. The unrest persisted into the night, disrupting public order in the capital city.

Authorities, represented by Kombes Pol Budi Hermanto, the Head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, urged the remaining protesters to return home, citing the end of the designated time for expressing grievances and the potential for further disruption. Hermanto emphasized the importance of public safety and the need for individuals to reunite with their families. The police also reported arresting 65 individuals suspected of involvement in instigating the violence and seized various items, including sharp weapons and Molotov cocktails, believed to be intended for use during the riots.
