Riquelme to challenge Perez in Real Madrid presidential elections

Spanish businessman Enrique Riquelme has officially entered the race to become Real Madrid's next president. He confirmed his candidacy on Saturday, setting up a challenge against the long-standing incumbent, Florentino Perez.

Riquelme, a 37-year-old entrepreneur in the renewable energy sector, submitted his paperwork at the club's offices. He expressed his belief that the election marks an important moment for Real Madrid, as it will allow members to vote after two decades. Perez has held the presidency since 2009 and has faced no opposition in previous elections.

If Riquelme's candidacy is validated by the electoral board, the campaign will commence, with the election anticipated roughly two weeks later. Riquelme's entry into the race comes shortly after Perez unexpectedly called for elections on May 12, initiating a brief period for candidates to declare their intentions. Riquelme is the first individual to challenge Perez, who first served as president from 2000 to 2006 and returned in 2009, since 2004.
