Rirratjingu Clan Elder Bakamumu Marika AM Dies

Arnhem Land's Rirratjingu clan has lost a significant leader with the passing of Bakamumu Marika AM. The clan group's Aboriginal corporation announced his death with "profound sadness," remembering him as a "highly respected Traditional Owner, elder and senior leader."

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bakamumu Marika AM, a highly respected Traditional Owner, elder and senior leader of the Rirratjingu Clan.

Marika was instrumental in founding the Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation, serving as its long-time chairman and later as patron. His contributions to his community were recognized in 2022 when he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his extensive community service to North-East Arnhem Land.

Described as a "steadfast advocate" for land rights, Marika continued a powerful legacy within Australia's Indigenous rights movement, building upon the work of his ancestors. His life's dedication was focused on improving opportunities for his people across education, community development, economic engagement, and the preservation of their culture.

His final words, as shared by the corporation, urged unity and a commitment to opportunity: "We must continue to strive for a foundation that provides opportunity for our people. You will carry that responsibility along with my wish that unity and love continue to be the mark of the Rirratjingu people.
