River Plate Rescues Draw in Bogotá Against Wasteful Santa Fe

Independiente Santa Fe dominated possession and created the most dangerous opportunities but ultimately failed to capitalize, resulting in a goalless draw against River Plate in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana round of 16 tie in Bogotá. The Colombian side, managed by Pablo Repetto, displayed a superior performance and generated several clear chances against goalkeeper Santiago Beltrán.

Despite fielding a squad with notable names, River Plate continued to exhibit difficulties in generating offensive play. Their first significant chance came from a free-kick, but Lautaro Rivero's header was well saved by goalkeeper Weimar Asprilla. Santa Fe quickly responded, with Hugo Rodallega testing Beltrán and Nahuel Bustos coming agonizingly close to opening the scoring.

Bustos was particularly wasteful, hitting the post twice. In the first half, after a fluid attacking move, his shot struck the woodwork in the 14th minute. The pattern continued in the second half when a defensive error by Rivero presented Bustos with a one-on-one opportunity, but his attempt to chip Beltrán sailed over the bar.

River Plate attempted to inject more dynamism into their attack with the introduction of Thiago Almada, one of the season's most significant signings in South American football. However, even Almada couldn't provide the necessary depth to Eduardo Coudet's side. Santa Fe pushed for a late winner, but their final execution in front of goal remained imprecise. River Plate, content with the away draw, will now look to leverage their home advantage in the second leg next Wednesday at the Más Monumental stadium.
