Rivers Assembly receives petition seeking dissolution of sports institute

The Rivers State House of Assembly is considering a petition that seeks to dismantle the existing Sports Institute in Osaka, Okrika Local Government Area, and reinstate the Government Sea School, Isaka.

On Monday, the House received a petition from the Sea School Isaka Alumni Foundation, requesting the House to repeal the Rivers State Sports Institute Law ( Cap. 123, Vol.6, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria), and re-enact a law to re-establish the defunct Government Sea School, Isaka in Okrika Local Government Area of the state.

The petition, brought forth by the Sea School Isaka Alumni Foundation, argues for the repeal of the Rivers State Sports Institute Law. It proposes enacting a new law to re-establish the Government Sea School, Isaka, and urges the executive arm to rehabilitate and equip the institution with modern facilities. The goal is to enable the school to fulfill its potential as a key institution for developing human capital crucial for the state's blue economy initiatives.

Presenting the Petition, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, representing Okrika Constituency, Hon Linda Somiari-Stewart prayed the House amongst others, to enact a new law re-establishing the school, and to advise the executive arm of government to rehabilitate and equip the school with modern facilities to enable the school play it’s role as a flagship institution for developing the human capital required to drive the blue economy in Rivers State.

During the plenary session, the petition was referred to the House Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions. In a separate matter, the Assembly received a report from its Committee on Works detailing the severe challenges posed by blocked drainages and canals in the Rumuokwuta and Rumuokeada communities of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. The report highlighted that these blockages have led to significant loss of life and property due to erosion and flooding, prompting calls for urgent executive intervention to mitigate the ongoing menace.

According to the report, the situation has resulted in loss of lives and property. Presenting the Report, the Chairman of the Committee, Emilia Amadi, stated the pitiable condition of Rumuokwada community as a result of the erosion, and implored the House to urge the Executive to direct the Ministry of Works to take steps to ensure that the people of Rumuokwada are saved from the debilitating menace of flood and erosion that has caused them severe pain.
