Road safety agency: The footage does not show whether the driver acted improperly

A flashing blue light and siren do not give a driver permission to use any speed or maneuver. But Slovenia’s road safety agency says the publicly available footage of a crash in a tunnel cannot establish what happened with enough certainty.

The Public Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Traffic Safety said the video does not reliably show the speed or movements of the individual vehicles, or the drivers’ reactions before the collision. It therefore considers it inappropriate to judge the conduct of particular drivers from the footage alone.

The agency also said that assessing the specific incident and determining responsibility do not fall within its remit. Questions about whether the driver of the vehicle carrying the president committed a traffic offense, and whether a penalty could apply, should be directed to the police, it said.

That is why we believe it would be inappropriate to assess or draw conclusions about the conduct of individual drivers on the basis of the footage.
