Rodri to have back surgery, new City boss Maresca dismisses transfer talk

New Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that World Cup winner Rodri requires surgery on a back issue. The midfielder is scheduled for the procedure on Monday, after which he will need a period of rest and recovery.

Maresca, speaking at his first press conference since taking over from Pep Guardiola, downplayed transfer speculation surrounding Rodri. Reports had linked the Spanish captain with a move to Real Madrid, but Maresca stated that such rumors are normal for top players, especially after a significant tournament win.

Around big players there are always speculations so I am not worried about that.

The Italian coach also acknowledged the immense challenge of succeeding Guardiola, who achieved immense success during his decade at the Etihad. Maresca expressed his privilege in taking on the role and confidence in continuing the club's successful trajectory, noting the club's history of managerial stability.

I think it is normal, also because they [Spain] won the World Cup and because he is one of the best players. I think every manager wants to have Rodri because he is a top player.

While Maresca hinted at potential activity in the transfer window, he remained tight-lipped about specific player movements. He expects the full squad to be available for training a few days before Manchester City's Community Shield match against Arsenal on August 16.
