Rohit Paudel leaves behind an inspiring legacy as ODI captaincy changes hands

Rohit Kumar Paudel's tenure as captain of Nepal's national cricket teams has concluded, with Sandeep Lamichhane now appointed as the new ODI skipper. This change follows Paudel's removal from the T20I captaincy four months prior. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced the decision on Monday but offered no specific reasons for the leadership transition in either format.

Paudel's captaincy is remembered for guiding Nepal to historic milestones. Under his leadership, the team qualified for two consecutive T20 World Cups, leaving a mark on the international stage by competing closely against top-tier teams. He also captained Nepal during their maiden appearance in the Asia Cup in 2023, where they faced cricketing giants India and Pakistan. Furthermore, Nepal secured their first-ever bilateral series victory against an ICC Full Member when they defeated the West Indies 2-1 in a T20I series.

During his time leading the national side, Paudel captained Nepal in 59 T20Is and 63 ODIs, achieving 33 T20I wins and 31 ODI wins. This record makes him Nepal's longest-serving captain. His captaincy began in November 2022, taking over from Lamichhane due to a legal case against the latter at the time. Paudel's early captaincy also saw Nepal win 11 of their last 12 League-2 matches, securing a direct qualification for the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

The replacement by Lamichhane marks a significant shift, especially given Lamichhane's previous legal issues which led to Paudel's initial appointment. While CAN has remained silent on the reasons behind these captaincy changes, Paudel's contributions have been substantial, marked by qualification for major tournaments and historic series wins. The future direction of Nepali cricket under Lamichhane's leadership remains to be seen.
