Rolpa landslide death toll rises to 10

A landslide in Rolpa, Nepal, caused by relentless rain, has claimed the lives of at least 10 people. Officials confirmed the rising death toll, identifying five of the victims as Shanti Pun Magar, 60, Kamal Bahadur Pun Magar, 80, Manrakhi Pun Magar, 75, Dal Bahadur Pun Magar, and 85-year-old Hastakala Roka Magar.

The death toll from a landslide triggered by relentless rain in Kotalbara in ward 5 of Thabang Rural Municipality in Rolpa has risen to ten, officials said.

Additional bodies were recovered from the Lungri and Madi rivers in Rolpa and Pyuthan, respectively. Three of these victims have also been identified, according to Rolpa Chief District Officer Ganga Bahadur Chhetri. The landslide was destructive, burying nine houses, a mobile shop, and two livestock sheds, along with a church.

Five more bodies were recovered from different locations along the Lungri river in Rolpa and the Madi river in neighbouring Pyuthan. Three of the victims have been identified.

Two individuals, Himal Pun Magar, 22, and Sanjay Gharti Magar, 25, sustained serious injuries and were initially treated at a local health center before being transferred to a provincial hospital in Butwal. A comprehensive search and rescue operation is underway, with personnel from the District Police Office, Thabang Area Police Office, the Nepali Army, the Armed Police Force, and specialized disaster-response teams deployed to the site. Specialized equipment and an investigation team are also part of the ongoing efforts.
