Romania Blasts Danube Rock to Boost Water Flow to Nuclear Reactor

Romania has undertaken an unusual measure, blasting a rock formation in the drought-stricken Danube River to divert more water to its only functioning nuclear power plant. The operation, which sent large amounts of water and stone into the air, aims to create a temporary dam.

This dam will channel additional water into the river branch supplying the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. One of the plant's two reactors was taken offline last week due to insufficient cooling water, underscoring the critical situation. The move highlights the broader energy challenges facing the region, where low water levels in the Danube are impacting nuclear facilities.

Neighboring Hungary is also concerned about its sole nuclear power plant, which relies on the Danube for cooling. Across Europe, heatwaves and drought have lowered river levels, creating worries about water supply, river transport, and electricity generation.

Romanian officials expect the water diversion work to be completed by Wednesday. Defense Minister Radu Miruta stated that each additional day the nuclear plant operates after Wednesday or Thursday is a gain, emphasizing that one day of operation is three times more effective than the cost of the operation itself.
