Romania downs drone in its airspace for first time since Ukraine war began

Romania's air force downed a drone in its airspace for the first time since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, a significant escalation in the country's response to aerial incursions. The drone was shot down by a Romanian F-16 pilot over Padina village, about 114 kilometers from the capital, Bucharest.

President Nicusor Dan confirmed the incident, emphasizing that the pilot could fire safely as the area was unpopulated. He stated that various institutions are investigating the event to determine all details. Foreign Minister Oana Toiu reiterated Romania's dedication to enhancing its air defense and drone defense capabilities through continued investment in modern technology.
