Romania Recalls Three Consuls General as New Consulates Fail to Launch

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) has initiated the recall of three designated consuls general appointed to lead newly established consular offices in Sao Paolo, Brazil; Nantes, France; and Frankfurt, Germany. The decision, approved by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, stems from the failure of these three consulates to become operational.

The consuls general were appointed in the summer of 2024 with the primary mission of opening these new general consulates. However, according to a statement from the MAE on July 23, the process of identifying and equipping the premises for these offices has not concluded successfully. Despite initial deadlines and several subsequent extensions, none of the three consular offices have become operational.

The government approved the recall during its session on July 23, 2026. The MAE's proposal highlighted that the operationalization process for the new consulates had not been completed within the initial timelines or the extended periods. This lack of progress led to the decision to withdraw the appointed officials.

Following the government's decision, the three consuls general have been given a maximum of 90 days to return to Romania. The recall signifies a setback in Romania's efforts to expand its diplomatic and consular presence in these key international locations.
