Romania's AUR Party Sets Conditions for Supporting PSD-Led Government

The Romanian party AUR is open to supporting a government led by the Social Democratic Party (PSD), but only if certain political conditions are met. Ramona Bruynseels, deputy leader of AUR's parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies, explained that while the party currently has an internal decision not to support any government it is not part of, it could open negotiations with PSD if the social democrats signal a willingness to dialogue.

Bruynseels indicated that AUR would also consider supporting a PSD-led government if the latter accepted more positions, including the Senate presidency. However, she reiterated the party's current stance, decided by its leadership council, that they will not vote for any government in which AUR is not included. She added that if artificial red lines continue to be drawn, isolating AUR and labeling them without basis as anti-Western, the party will push for early elections and the suspension of Bucharest mayor Nicușor Dan.

"We have 90 parliamentarians, we have their signatures and we are already discussing with other parliamentarians from other parliamentary groups and independents," Bruynseels stated. "We believe there are chances, in the context where President Nicușor Dan's performance is dissatisfying many people right now." She asserted that early elections are the most correct and moral way to resolve the current political crisis, as other parties are failing to reach a consensus. She claimed that a majority of people on the street would also prefer early elections and a change in leadership.

Bruynseels also touched upon AUR's potential governing measures, emphasizing that the party's primary objective is to remain connected with the people. AUR parliamentarians are actively engaging with citizens. Politically, the party aims to find a solution for AUR to join the government. If excluded, AUR intends to pursue early elections and the suspension of Mayor Nicușor Dan, citing public dissatisfaction with his performance and a desire for change among the electorate.
